While in opposition, the NDP consistently opposed choice in education. And over the last three years, many of NDP allied left-wing special interest groups including Public Interest Alberta and Progress Alberta have been running public campaigns to set the table for the NDP to defund independent schools.
According to Calgary Herald columnist Licia Corbella, the NDP seems to be readying to move forward with this plan: Corbella: ‘NDP's attack on religious schools violates the Charter’
The NDP has targeted independent schools run by faith based communities, demanding that statements of faith be removed from their ‘Safe and Caring’ school policies.
One school was threatened with losing their accreditation for having the following statement, deemed as “unwelcoming, uncaring and/or disrespectful” by the NDP government, in their school policy:
“We believe men and women were created in the image of God, after His likeness, and therefore have transcendent, intrinsic worth.”
The NDP and their allies are targeting faith based schools today and opening the door to defunding all independent schools.
With only months left before the election, they are rapidly increasing the pace of their radical agenda, hoping to disrupt long standing institutions while they still hold government.
This is why it’s critical that we act now to stop them.
The United Conservatives will never waver in our support of the fundamental freedom to practice one’s religion of choice freely and openly. Freedom of religion is protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as well as the Alberta Bill of Rights. And the Universal Declaration of Human Rights clearly states that “parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.”
We will continue to stand behind Alberta’s longstanding tradition of school choice, and we will fight for all families to have the options for their children that best fit the unique and individual needs of the child.
Join us and tell the NDP that Alberta’s proud and successful tradition of school choice is worth preserving. Tell the NDP that children and their families should not be used as political footballs as part of their ideological agenda.
