Our Roots
Our Party traces its roots to the founding of our province in 1905. Operating initially as the Conservative Party of Alberta, the Party changed its name to the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta in 1959.

Premier Ed Stelmach, a strong advocate for rural Alberta, oversaw major infrastructure expansion and helped guide the province through a period of rapid growth and change.

Premier Alison Redford emphasized Alberta’s role on the national and international stage and brought renewed focus to public services and interprovincial collaboration.

Premier Jim Prentice
Premier Jim Prentice brought federal experience and a focus on reform. He introduced budget and democratic changes, pushed for infrastructure investment, and worked to rebuild trust in government. He also recognized early that Alberta’s conservatives needed to unite.

Wildrose Party
At the same time, the Wildrose Party was rising as a powerful force in Alberta politics. Founded in 2002, Wildrose became a voice for everyday Albertans who felt government had grown out of touch.

Danielle Smith
Under the leadership of Danielle Smith, and later Brian Jean, Wildrose fought for fiscal responsibility, local accountability, and respect for grassroots democracy. As the Official Opposition, Wildrose played a vital role in holding government to account and advancing core conservative values across the province.

The 2015 provincial election was a turning point. With conservatives divided, the NDP formed government. The lesson was clear, unity was essential.

Through the leadership of Progressive Conservative Leader Jason Kenney and Wildrose Leader Brian Jean, members of both parties overwhelmingly voted to come together as one.

On July 22, 2017, the United Conservative Party was born, a single movement built on shared values, united purpose, and a common commitment to Alberta.

Premier Jason Kenney
Premier Jason Kenney was elected the first UCP Leader and led the party to a decisive victory in 2019. As Premier, his government focused on restoring the Alberta Advantage, defending provincial jurisdiction, supporting job creation, and cutting red tape.

On October 6, 2022, Premier Danielle Smith was elected Leader of the United Conservative Party and sworn in as Alberta’s Premier shortly after. In May 2023, she led the UCP to win another strong majority government. With a focus on standing up to Ottawa, protecting families, and defending Alberta’s constitutional rights, she leads a united team working to keep Alberta strong and free.

Today, the United Conservative Party stands proudly as the product of two distinct but aligned traditions. One built on decades of government experience. One built on grassroots passion and principled conservative values.
