More choice and fewer unnecessary costs for your family. On August 17, the federal government decided to scrap its electric vehicle mandate, a clear victory for Albertans. It came thanks in large part to the advocacy of your United Conservative government, under Premier Danielle Smith’s leadership.
Your United Conservative government identified the EV mandate as one of nine federal laws and policies affecting our economy, costs and provincial jurisdiction. The decision builds on other federal steps on policies Alberta has consistently opposed, including a commitment not to proceed with an oil and gas production cap and an agreement-in-principle allowing Alberta to keep regulating methane under its existing system.
What does that mean for you? You stay free to choose the vehicle that works best for your family, your business and your budget. The mandate would have taken choices away from families, added unnecessary costs for consumers and businesses, and placed enormous new demands on electricity grids without the infrastructure to support it.
Alberta is already delivering real emissions reductions without sacrificing affordability or economic growth. Since 2019, overall emissions have declined 9 per cent, while transportation emissions have fallen 17 per cent.
Premier Smith and your United Conservative government stood up for environmental policy that is practical, achievable and technology-neutral. This decision is an important step toward resetting the relationship between Alberta and the federal government, and we’ll keep working on what comes next, including a close look at the proposed replacement vehicle-emissions regulations.
Your vehicle, your choice and common sense. That’s your United Conservative government getting the job done.
Today marks a clear victory for Albertans.
