Meta’s historic investment in Alberta

Premier Danielle Smith and partners at the Meta data centre groundbreaking, July 8, 2026

Thousands of jobs and lower transmission costs on your power bill. On July 8, Meta announced it will build its first Canadian data centre in Alberta, an investment of more than $13 billion and one of the largest private-sector investments in Canadian history.

The project will create more than 3,000 construction jobs and support 300 operational jobs. It will generate approximately $250 million a year in benefits for Albertans, including royalties, taxes, levies and fees. Meta is also investing about $60 million in local roads and water infrastructure.

What does that mean for you? Meta is fully funding new generation and grid infrastructure for the data centre, which will improve reliability across the Alberta grid. Electricity customers across the province will see transmission costs on their utility bills cut by up to six per cent. And the site’s dry cooling system needs no operational water for cooling.

Your United Conservative government set clear rules for large AI data centres before opening the door to investment. Data centres here must bring their own power, pay for the infrastructure they need and meet strict environmental and water requirements. Under Premier Smith, we created the right conditions to attract world-leading investment while protecting the interests of Albertans.

Thousands of jobs, new revenue and lower transmission costs. That’s your United Conservative government getting the job done for Albertans.
