Premier Danielle Smith has secured a new energy agreement with Ottawa that clears the path for a major West Coast pipeline, ends the federal oil and gas production cap, and suspends the net-zero power regulations in Alberta.
This agreement is a major win for Alberta’s energy workers and for families who depend on a strong economy. It gives Alberta the certainty needed to grow production, attract investment, and protect good-paying energy jobs.
A new Indigenous co-owned pipeline to the West Coast
Ottawa has formally declared that a new Indigenous co-owned Alberta bitumen pipeline to Asian markets is a project of national interest. Alberta and Canada will work together on the application and approval process for a privately financed pipeline capable of moving more than one million barrels per day to a strategic deep-water port.
This new pipeline will add to the capacity created by the Trans Mountain Expansion, which is already moving an additional 300,000 to 400,000 barrels per day to tidewater for export to Asia. Together, these routes will give Alberta far better access to high-demand markets that want reliable, responsibly produced Canadian energy.
Federal production cap dropped
As part of the agreement, the federal government has committed not to implement the oil and gas production cap. Ending this cap removes a major threat to Alberta jobs and investment. It also allows Alberta producers to increase output and move toward long-term production goals supported by global demand.
Net-Zero Power Regulations suspended
Ottawa has also agreed to immediately suspend its net-zero power regulations in Alberta. This suspension protects Alberta’s power grid from unrealistic federal timelines and opens the door to major new investments, including AI computing projects and industrial development that rely on reliable electricity.
A stronger future for Alberta
This agreement marks a new phase in Alberta’s relationship with Ottawa. With a clear path to a West Coast pipeline, no federal production cap, and the power regs suspended, Alberta’s energy industry can plan, invest, and grow with confidence.
Premier Smith and United Conservatives are standing up for Alberta’s interests, defending our workers, and securing the future of our energy economy.
