Room to live, a place to park and a community you can be part of. Whether it’s your first home or your forever home, that’s what you want from your neighbourhood.
Premier Danielle Smith heard from Albertans who feel the pace and scale of some high-density infill is changing that, with concerns about parking, traffic and building scale. So on October 8, your United Conservative government took action to support quality infill housing while preserving the character of established neighbourhoods.
Edmonton will be required to bring its high-density infill rules back to the housing types, density and height limits in place before its 2024 zoning changes, and to restore minimum on-site parking requirements from before 2020. The city has three months from October 8 to amend its bylaw.
Calgary recently repealed blanket rezoning and will keep that approach. The city will be directed to map out the lands restored to previous low-density residential zones, so rules for housing types, building heights and parking stay in place. These measures will stay in place while both cities review their land use bylaws, consult the public and work with industry on a more balanced approach.
What does that mean for you? Across the province, infill is now expected to be appropriately scaled, backed by adequate utilities and water infrastructure, and responsive to local conditions. The goal isn’t to stop infill. It’s to make sure growth respects the capacity of established communities like yours.
We can build more homes without asking you to give up what makes your neighbourhood home. One in four new Canadian homes are built in Alberta, and we’ll keep up that strong record of home building.
More homes, responsible growth and neighbourhoods that still feel like home. That’s your United Conservative government getting the job done for Albertans.
Over the past few months, endless Albertans have told us the same story.

They saved for years to buy a single family home on a quiet street. They picked that neighbourhood on purpose, because of the park at the end of the block or the school two streets over or the neighbours… pic.twitter.com/TRrrvCExGK
