Alberta parents send their kids to school to learn. Not to be handed a political message.
That’s why your United Conservative government is setting clear, consistent flag rules for every school in the province, so classrooms stay focused on what matters most: student learning and success.
Our schools belong to all Albertans. They shouldn’t be a place for anyone to make political, social or ideological statements. They should be a place where every student feels part of something bigger.
So the Canadian and Alberta flags will fly outside every school during the school year. These are the symbols that unite us and reflect the values Albertans share.
Other flags still have their place at the right time, from municipal and Franco-Albertan flags on specified days to First Nations, Métis and foreign national flags during official visits and celebrations, or flags tied directly to what students are learning in class.
Whether your kids attend a public, separate, francophone, charter or accredited independent school, the same clear rules apply. Every school follows the same framework.
The rules cover what schools display on their buildings, grounds and equipment, and on their websites and social media. They don’t apply to flags students or staff wear or display on their own personal items.
Parents can send their kids to school knowing the focus is on learning, not politics.
Schools have until Jan. 4, 2027, to make the change.
Your United Conservative government is getting the job done, keeping politics out of the classroom so Alberta schools can stay focused on helping every student learn and succeed.
